Holistic Approach to Cough, Cold, and Sore Throat Season

When a sore throat and cold strike, turning to natural, holistic remedies can offer comfort and support without relying on synthetic medications. There are so many incredible healing ingredients from nature that can soothe a sore throat, clear congestion, and boost the immune system. Here’s how I’ve been approaching wellness using holistic practices, including tinctures, essential oils, homemade marshmallow root marshmallows, and nutrient-packed mushroom broth.

The Healing Power of Mushroom Broth

One of my go-to remedies is organic mushroom broth, which is packed with immune-boosting properties. This particular broth contains a blend of button mushrooms, Lion’s Mane, and medicinal mushrooms like Cordyceps, Reishi, Turkey Tail, and Maitake. These mushrooms are not only known for their immune-boosting benefits but also for supporting overall wellness, making them perfect for the body during illness.

The broth also includes celery, carrots, onions, garlic, and shallots, which help reduce inflammation and promote immune health. Apple cider vinegar is used to extract nutrients from the mushrooms and other ingredients, aiding in digestion and overall gut health. This mushroom broth has been a comforting and nourishing option, providing warmth, hydration, and important nutrients to support the immune system and soothe the throat. Bone broth is also another amazing remedy as well, I often interchange between which I'm using for variety and also based on the benefits I'm looking to receive.

Bee Propolis for Throat Relief

Bee propolis is another powerful remedy. Known for its antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties, bee propolis is excellent for soothing throat irritation and fighting off bacteria. It helps reduce inflammation in the throat, which can make a significant difference when dealing with soreness. I trust St. Francis tinctures for their high-quality ingredients, and a few sprays of bee propolis directly to the throat can provide relief and support the immune system in fighting off illness.

Homemade Marshmallows (extracted from marshmallow root)

Marshmallow root is an incredible herb for soothing and protecting mucous membranes, which is why it’s perfect for a sore throat. Homemade marshmallow root marshmallows are a delicious way to get this healing herb into your system. Marshmallow root has anti-inflammatory properties, and it helps coat the throat, reducing irritation and encouraging healing.

The marshmallows are made with marshmallow root extract, agar-agar, and raw honey—a natural antibacterial agent. Not only do they provide a sweet treat, but they also work to calm and soothe the throat in a gentle, natural way. It’s a fun, comforting remedy that supports the healing process.

Essential Oils for Respiratory Support

When it comes to respiratory support, doTERRA essential oils are a go-to. Eucalyptus and peppermint oils are particularly helpful for clearing sinuses and improving breathing. Eucalyptus is known for its decongestant and antimicrobial properties, while peppermint helps open airways and soothes a sore throat.

I use these oils in a diffuser to clear the air and improve breathing throughout the day. When congestion is stronger, a simple steam inhalation with a few drops of each oil in hot water works wonders. I also make a chest rub using these oils combined with castor oil or coconut oil, which I gently massage into the chest. This helps open up the airways, ease congestion, and promote deep breathing during rest.

The Unda 220 Homeopathics

A staple in my wellness routine is Unda 220. This homeopathic remedy is perfect for reducing congestion, calming inflammation, and promoting detoxification. It supports the immune system in a natural way, helping the body clear out toxins and encouraging a balanced response to illness. The combination of eucalyptus, slippery elm, and propolis in the tincture has been incredibly effective for soothing the throat and supporting respiratory health.

Key Tips for Choosing Bone Broth

While I’ve been using mushroom broth for its immune-boosting properties, it’s worth mentioning how to choose a quality bone broth if that’s your preferred option. If you’re looking for a bone broth, opt for one that’s grass-fed and organic to ensure that it’s packed with nutrients like collagen, gelatin, and amino acids. These are essential for repairing tissues and supporting the body’s natural healing process.

Always make sure to read labels and choose a broth that’s free of artificial additives or preservatives. The best broths are made with high-quality, organic ingredients and simmered for hours to extract the maximum nutrients.

Herbal Tinctures

In addition to the remedies I’ve mentioned, herbal tinctures can be incredibly effective for soothing sore throats, clearing congestion, and supporting the immune system. Tinctures are concentrated extracts of herbs, making them a powerful and convenient way to deliver healing properties to the body. Here are a few of my favorite herbal tinctures for cold and flu relief:

  • Slippery Elm: This herb is a soothing remedy for sore throats and dry coughs. Its mucilage coats the throat, reducing irritation and helping to calm a cough. It can replace throat lozenges or syrups that often contain artificial ingredients.

  • Marshmallow Root: Known for its anti-inflammatory and mucilage-rich properties, marshmallow root helps soothe throat irritation and reduce coughing. It’s a gentle alternative to many over-the-counter cough suppressants.

  • Echinacea: Famous for its immune-boosting effects, Echinacea is perfect for the onset of cold symptoms. It can replace conventional cold medications by helping to strengthen the immune system and reduce the duration of colds.

  • Oregano: Oregano is a powerful antimicrobial and antiviral herb that can help fight off respiratory infections. It works well as an alternative to over-the-counter cold medications, especially those that target bacterial or viral infections.

Incorporating these tinctures into your wellness routine offers a natural way to address symptoms without relying on harsh chemicals or synthetic treatments. Just a few drops of these tinctures in warm water or tea can support your immune system and provide the soothing relief you need.

Wrapping Up

Incorporating these natural remedies into a daily routine has proven to be a supportive and soothing approach to dealing with a cold or sore throat. From the nourishing mushroom broth and soothing marshmallow root marshmallows to the powerful bee propolis and essential oils, these holistic remedies provide a comprehensive and natural way to encourage healing.

Whether using St. Francis tinctures, doTERRA essential oils, or Unda homeopathics, it’s clear that nature has provided us with a wealth of tools to support wellness. Holistic remedies not only soothe and relieve symptoms but also promote long-term health by supporting the immune system and promoting overall balance.

Remember, the key to holistic healing is consistency, balance, and listening to your body’s needs. Nature offers us so many wonderful tools, and embracing them is one of the best ways to support our bodies in their healing journey.

Stay well, and always choose holistic wellness! 🌿✨
